The Rolling Cloneswere born on the corner of Armitage and Halstead at Nick’s in the early1990’s. A well-known financial analyst named Art McQueen used to frequent Nick’s on Fridayafternoons after battling the financial markets all week. This analyst would come into Nick’slooking for a few pints, a few laughs, and lots of Rolling Stones songs on the jukebox. Theproblem was that this particular analyst faced a major nemesis in the bartender who had verylittle tolerance for Rolling Stones songs on the jukebox. Hence, the formation of this StonesTribute Band: The Rolling Clones.Along with Art as Mick, this band’s personnel are stellar local professional musicians andinclude John Blaha on Drums, Bruce Krippner on Bass, Randy Farr on percussion, John Meadas Keef and Steve Doyle as Woody, rounded out by Lisa McQueen on keys and Cash Michaelson Sax.
John Mead, guitarist for the Rolling Clones, bandleader of John Mead’s True Believers, and frequent Martyrs performer, presents Breckenridge & Company, a woman-led band presenting the history of Fleetwood Mac, from Peter Green through Buckingham-Nicks. The band features the powerful groove, guitar fireworks, and rich vocal harmonies present throughout the long, varied history of Fleetwood Mac.

The result is a psychedelic feast reminiscent of the golden years of Tropicalia.

Aubele's hunting signature sound, with it's precise beats, scattered bandoneon samples, nylon string guitar, dark atmospherics and male and female vocal contrast give space this time also to several cinematic tripped out tango infused instrumentals. "I always loved instrumental music. From Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother, to Piazzolla's album Pulsacion, to Baden Powell's Afro Sambas to Boards of Canada. It grabs you in a different way than if you have vocals. When there's no lyrics, a barrier lifts up and the music connects direct with other areas of your subconscious, often with emotions that are hard to put in words".The album moves at midnight tempos, with carefully written melodies, both on the songs and on the instrumentals. "The melody is what really catches your attention. It's like a thread, like a story. I always need the melody. It guides you through the night". The opening track "Somewhere Else", features a collaboration by Jazz chanteuse Melody Gardot. Her smoky vocals floating on a slow but heavy beat making a natural contrast with Aubele's low baritone, sounding like something from another era. Long time collaborator Natalia Clavier also appears on 2 songs, with her dramatic yet crystal clear voice. Mauro Refosco (Atoms for Peace) plays percussion on the slow motion tripped out-latin "Carrousel sin Fin", and legendary NY jazz saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin plays Blade-Runner-esque lines to an obsessive dub beat on "El Mago".

Honest, full of heart, with confessional lyrics, Cash leaves us feeling good and wanting more.Cash's anticipated EP Blush will be released on August 2nd.
Blending the folksy charm of Midwestern roots music with the rollicking sensibilities of classic honky tonk, Tommy Goodroad’s unique brand of country rock & roll shines on his new EP, “Tommy Goodroad and The Highway Birds.” Named for his solid backing band, the EP was recorded in Goodroad’s home state of Minnesota, as well as Chicago, where he is now based.

“As a child I can remember locking myself in my room with a big old set of headphones and listening to the Band's Music From Big Pink album over and over again,” said Reid Genauer, the lead singer and founder of the New York based quintet Assembly of Dust. “Besides loving the hell out of the music, I was intrigued with the production value in the recordings. As I listened I felt almost like I was there in the room with the Band at a moment of perfection. That intimate listening experience drew me in and is what inspired me to be a musician.”Drawing on that influence and countless others, over the last ten years Assembly of Dust has crafted a unique sound that recalls the likes of the Band, Traffic and Neil Young. They have taken that early 70's Americana swagger, put their own funky spin on it, and earned comparisons to the next generation of Americana heroes including Ryan Adams, Mumford and Sons and Wilco. Hooky melodies, poetic lyrics, and a profound depth of musicianship promptedUSA Today to say Assembly of Dust has what it takes to "dazzle the Alt-Country universe."

Grown in large part by the passion and devotion of the fans called Neighbors, their symbiotic relationship inspires and touches every performance. The creation of childhood neighbors Richard James (vocals, keys) and Lyle Brewer (guitar), Neighbor combines ambitious composition, soulful balladry, and a fearless approach to their lengthy improvisations. Alaina Stacey co-founded the Nashville-based Americana group, Maybe April, appearing onstage at the Wilshire Theatre in Los Angeles, alongside Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, and The Goo Goo Doll’s Johnny Reznick as part of a GRAMMY week performance called A Song Is Born. Their Audiotree video went viral, and it remains one of Audiotree’s most popular videos. With Maybe April, she opened for Brandy Clark and Sarah Jarosz, performed at Pilgrimage Music Festival, Merlefest, SXSW, CMA Fest, and other festivals, and released an EP and record, The Other Side, which was produced by her brother Julian. The band won “Americana Group of the Year'' two years in a row at the Arkansas Country Music Awards. On her upcoming EP, “DAY,” which is the second in the three-part series EP series, Stacey hones in on active energy, the feeling of walking into broad daylight with a determination to right all of one’s wrongs. Recorded and produced by Evan Redwine in Nashville and Brian Deck in Chicago, Stacey’s EP “DAY” features a bright and sunny sonic outlook, despite many of the songs being drenched in heartbreak and lyrical melancholy. In her latest single, “I Would,” Alaina works with an upbeat and shiny pallet to bring hard truths into the harsh light of day.
Nashville-based artist Madeleine Kelson has been writing and performing music since childhood, developing a unique, country-leaning style of Americana laced with elements of rock and blues. Inspired by artists like Patty Griffin, Jason Isbell, and Brandi Carlile, she’s a dynamic and down-to-earth storyteller, using her own life experiences as fodder for poetic, yet accessible, lyrics. Madeleine has been featured twice on NPR, has viral TikToks featuring her single, The Way I Do, with a combined 1.4 Million+ views. She is featured on Spotify editorial playlists, including Queer As Folk, Emerging Americana, and Fresh Finds Folk. With her April 2022 launch of her debut solo album, While I Was Away, Kelson blends haunting melodies and driving percussion with a particularly human warmth.

In 2009, Miles Arntzen started EMEFE with one purpose: to create an unparalleled live experience around his original music. Three weeks later, they played their first show to a ravenously packed house in New York City. Four years later, they had played countless venues across the country, opened for Passion Pit and Big Boi, and released studio albums that documented their live sound. In 2013, the band challenged themselves to create a studio record that surpassed their reputation as merely a great live act. Holing away for 2 years, they used the studio, not the stage, as their instrument to both capture the music's energy and explore its depth. They now present the world with EMEFE, a concept album debuting the band's fearless funk-pop music in an unparalleled listening experience.EMEFE is about breaking through static, the undefinable noise and clutter of everyday life. The album’s concepts were inspired by French author Jacques Lusseyran’s And There Was Light, chronicling a blind man’s realization of light and love in his time during the French resistance movement. After years of creating an original and fearless pop style showcased through their live performances, their signature style is finally exhibited on their new record. EMEFE’s beats are a cross between Fela Kuti and Prince, with vocals reminiscent of the Talking Heads’ candor and the Beach Boys’ lushness... all with a unique pop sensibility. Coming to terms with frustration, anxiety and fear, the album pits complacency against change. The first half of the album (the ‘Tension Suite’) descends into these static emotions without ever escaping them; the second half (the ‘Release Suite’) ascends beyond, into a place of clarity and peace.EMEFE has collaborated with artists such as Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Hoodie Allen, Baloji, Chico Mann, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Robby Hunter Band, Grace Weber, and more. Taking the drum chair with afrobeat pioneers Antibalas and Arcade Fire's Will Butler, Arntzen also established himself as a go‐to New York City musician by the time he turned 23, collaborating and sharing stages with artists such as Arcade Fire, The Roots, Nile Rodgers, Tuneyards, Action Bronson, My Morning Jacket, Angelique Kidjo, Tony Allen and more.EMEFE will be released May 5 2015.

12th Annual MobettaHoliday JamOur Favorite Holiday TraditionYear in and year out,Maurice Mobetta Brown’s Christmas gift to Chicago plays out on our stage, and never fails to be THE show of the year. Each year we anxiously wait to hear which musical giants Maurice will get to grace our stage, like little kids waiting to open their stockings. Maurice s own musical star has done nothing but sky rocket since we first encountered him all the way back in his Lettuce days in New Orleans. Originally from Harvey, Illinois, Maurice’s ticket to musical dominance was punched early on,when he won the prestigious Wynton Marsalis prize. He went on from there to attend Chicago’s own Columbia College. A seven time grammy winner, so far,Mobetta has played, and arrangedfor Lettuce,Tedeschi Trucks Band, Anderson Paak and The Free Nationals as well as Silk Sonic. Maurice is also an accomplished solo artist and a brilliant bandleader, not to mention his amazing resume as a producer. In past years Maurice has brought alonga slew of legendary artists to help him celebrate Chicago and the holidays. FromMononeon to Thundercat and fromTalib Kweli to Cory Henry every year his line up is packed with the heaviest hitters in the game in unimaginable all star arrangements. Last year we had Anderson Paak onstage with Weedie Bramah Isiah Sharkey and Sput. Where can anyone ever see such a thing except once a year? HERE

Run for the maracas, get out the cocktail shaker and prepare to be "samba-sized." SAMBA BAMBA, the wacky, "Sergio Mendes meets the B-52's" 8-piece Latin-flavored, retro crazy band is back after a two year hiatus at Martyrs' on Monday, December 11 beginning at 8 pm. The evening will celebrate the release of the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the band’s 1997 debut recording, LUST FOR SAMBA. This special performance will feature a full evening of Samba Bamba, showcasing material from the new 2-disc CD release which contains remixes of the band’s entire 1997 release, a never before released track and a special second disc of previously unreleased material recorded in 1995 with Samba Bamba’s original vocalist, Kirsten Gustafson (aka Goostie). The CD and download cards for the anniversary edition of LUST FOR SAMBA will be available at the performance. In addition to a celebration of Samba Bamba’s “greatest hits,” the band will offer their unique, spicy twist on a sprinkling of traditional songs of the season. The evening will also feature a special guest appearance by KIRSTEN GUSTAFSON as Goostie. Gustafson, renowned jazz singer and former Atlantic Records recording artist, will join Samba Bamba onstage during the performance.Samba Bamba was formed by RICHARD KNIGHT, JR. as an homage to the music of Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66. Knight, a comedic performer known to audiences for his work with the Annoyance Theater and TV's "Wild Chicago," portrays the band's front man Monty "Sugarloaf" Mattachine, renowned vocalist JEN ZIAS portrays Lupe Lowenstein, Samba Bamba's lead vocalist and VICTOR SALVO is Lindo McCartney, the group's colorful backing vocalist. These three "live cartoon characters" front five of the area's top musicians, SCOTT STEVENSON (musical director, keyboards), STEVE DOLLINGER (guitar), RANDY HENRY (bass), ALEJO POVEDA (percussion legend), and GERALD DOWD (drums aka the busiest man in show business). Together, SAMBA BAMBA has been musically making love to audiences since their debut in 1994.Expect a lot more than moldy fruitcake at the wackiest holiday party you'll attend this year.
