DISTRICT 97 is undoubtedly the most musically adventurous rock band in the world to feature an American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist. Since 2008, this quintet from Chicago has melded an adventurous, uncompromising instrumental prowess with the look, sound, and stage presence of vocalist Leslie Hunt. Formed by old friends in 2003 within the vibrant Minneapolis music scene, they have been tireless stewards of the midwestern roots music community. Performing with infectious energy and an undeniable joy, Pert Near’s strong songcraft melds with old-time sensibilities in a unique brand of modern string band music they deliver to fans around the world. Pert Near has had the privilege of helping to establish and continuing to curate and host the Blue Ox Music Festival. Their new album, ‘Waiting Days,’ is now available. Bronwyn Keith-Hynes has long been renowned as a prolific instrumentalist, earning two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. But on her latest album I Built a World, the Charlottesville native unlocks an impressive new sound: her voice."This is the first album I've ever sung lead on. Singing is something I'd always thought I'd do at some point and in 2020 I had the time and space to finally find my voice," Bronwyn says. Even as the pandemic halted touring and so much else, vocal lessons kept her focused. "It's funny," she jokes of the timing, "you put a mask on me and suddenly I want to sing."I Built a World marks her first vocal album, but Bronwyn has been a musician since before she can remember. "Apparently, I saw two girls busking on the street playing fiddles when I was three," she explains with a laugh, "and I pointed to them and said, 'I will do that.'"

Though many artists are defined by place, only a handful of artists come to define the places they’re from. The Local Honeys are Kentucky and Kentucky runs through their veins like an unbridled racehorse. When a master songsmith like Tom T Hall calls an artist “a great credit to a wonderful Kentucky tradition” it’s time to pull up a chair and pay attention. As it pertains to The Local Honeys he was right on the money. For almost a decade the duo (Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokley) have been an integral part of the Kentucky musicscape. They’ve paid their dues, garnering countless accolades and accomplishments (tours with Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, praise from the New York Times) and have become the defining sound of real deal, honest-to-god Kentucky music. Lydia Cash grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Chicago on a whim in 2013, and her love for the city has since become a wellspring of inspiration for her music.​Cash's latest release, Indigo, boasts her fresh indie take on country music, weaving synths with traditional pedal steel, her airy voice floating with stacked harmonies and emotional, heartfelt lyrics. The five songs share a common theme of longing, whether that be for a person, a feeling, or for the past. Honest, full of heart, with confessional lyrics, Cash leaves us feeling good and wanting more.​Cash's anticipated EP Blush will be released on August 2nd.

John Kadlecik is a singer, songwriter, and musician based in the DC-area who is primarily known for being a guitar-slinging sideman to Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir in the band Furthur. Original co-founder of Dark Star Orchestra right here on Martyrs' stage, John has been performing improvisationally-oriented shows and touring nationally for the last 20 years. His work includes several studio releases of original music, and he is currently active with Melvin Seals & JGB in addition his own group, The John Kadlecik Band, and The Golden Gate Wingmen. Martyrs' is thrilled to host 2 nights with John K's Furthurmore!

CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series, ‘The First Time’, is unlike any storytelling show in Chicago. It pairs our six unique readers' personal stories about a first-time experience with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by our house band, The First Time Three, featuring Liam Davis, Gerald Dowd and Steve Frisbie. The band has played with musicians including Robbie Fulks, Nora O'Connor, Justin Roberts, Tributosaurus, Frisbie and more, and takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements of said covers. The People’s Front of Zeppelin is the world’s premiere international online Led Zeppelin tribute band. Formed as a YouTube channel in 2019 by drummer George Fludas, guitarist Ivan Jakic, and bassist Pete Etxenike, their inspired and acclaimed videos of Led Zeppelin covers have received hundreds of thousands of views simply through word of mouth. Our performances so honor the sound and spirit of Led Zeppelin that Time Warner frequently mistakes our videos for actual Led Zeppelin records.

Jack Callahan is a musician based in Chicago, IL. He is known for his singing and songwriting and backing of traditional Irish music on guitar. A multi-instrumentalist, Jack can be heard in the pubs and clubs with his fellow Boils bandmates, James Conway and Mike Austin. Performed, recorded and produced by Jack Callahan, This Settled Life spans the songwriting journey from his unsettled formative years until now. The songs touch upon themes such as looking for love(I'll Keep Searching), coping with loss(Ghosts of Pictures Past) and overall hope. When not pursuing music, he enjoys his settled life.

A Six-piece band, The Mary Wallopers were formed by brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy and their friend Sean McKenna traveling the length and breadth of Ireland singing and collecting songs. After ten years, five albums, innumerable sold out shows, and countless libations, Americana mavericks Horseshoes & Hand Grenades appropriately consider themselves a “family” on a wild, wonderful, and often whacky roller coaster. The bond between the quintet— Adam Greuel [guitar, vocals], David C. Lynch [harmonica, accordion, vocals], Collin Mettelka [fiddle, vocals], Russell Pedersen [banjo, vocals], and Samual Odin [bass, vocals]— fuels their creativity and chemistry on stage and in the studio.“Sometimes, it feels like we’re modern day cowboys on some kind of strange journey,” Adam affirms with a laugh. “We’re five friends who set out to do something we enjoy doing, meet interesting people, see old friends, and make some new buddies along the way. Because of that sense of friendship, everything seems to happen organically.”That’s been the case since these five musicians first met in Stevens Point, WI at college, joined forces, and hit the road harder post-graduation in roughly 2013. They have ignited stages alongside everyone from Greensky Bluegrass, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Trampled By Turtles to Railroad Earth, Merle Haggard, and Marty Stuart in addition to appearances at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Delfest, High Sierra Music Festival, Blue Ox Music Festival, Northwest String Summit, John Hartford Memorial Festival, and many more. Their five albums—Another Round [2012], This Old Town [2013], Middle Western [2015], The Ode (2018), and Miles in Blue (2020) take the listener through a wide range of musical and emotional landscapes, something surely provoked by the five different members all sharing songwriting duties.Their most recent album, “Miles in Blue” is an 18-track album that celebrates their 10 years together as a band. While the album certainly nods to their tried and true blend of “new-time old-time” music, it also explores new musical avenues as the band pushes themselves to discover what else “can be”.“It marks a point of growth,” explains Adam. “We’ve got those ripper type tunes we’re known for on there, but we’re experimenting with other elements. Little pieces of everybody are encapsulated in this record. We were really conscious of allowing our respective musical curiosities into the fold. Sam drops in a jazz and classical feel. Dave brings that Zydeco, Cajun, and old school blues vibe. Collin turned up this kinda pop folk energy, and Russell gives us the old-timey banjo feel. For me, I’m trying to play out my singer-songwriter curiosities. There are five songwriters in the band, and we’ve gotten better at harnessing our individual creativity and bringing it to the collective.”The boys found the perfect place to bottle those signature spirits. They retreated to Cannon Falls, MN in order to live and record at Pachyderm Studios — where Nirvana recorded In Utero — for just a week. Joined by the Hard Working American’s Chad Staehly in the producer’s chair, they tracked the eighteen numbers that would comprise Miles in Blue over the course of a marathon session.“Pachyderm is in the middle of nowhere,” he elaborates. “We’re all outdoorsy people, so the setting was super comfortable. It contributed to the laid back approach. It was by far the easiest recording project we’ve done. The whole experience was super positive and uplifting.”The Horseshoes & Hand Grenades family grows stronger by the day. “The best part of this has been building a community,” Adam leaves off. “In this day and age, it’s wise to look for things that bring people together rather than separate them. We’re creating an extended family to get through these times together. That’s the ‘Horseshoe Crew.’ Everything happens because of that bond between the band and the folks there fueling the fire.”
