Though many artists are defined by place, only a handful of artists come to define the places they’re from. The Local Honeys are Kentucky and Kentucky runs through their veins like an unbridled racehorse. When a master songsmith like Tom T Hall calls an artist “a great credit to a wonderful Kentucky tradition” it’s time to pull up a chair and pay attention. As it pertains to The Local Honeys he was right on the money. For almost a decade the duo (Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokley) have been an integral part of the Kentucky musicscape. They’ve paid their dues, garnering countless accolades and accomplishments (tours with Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, praise from the New York Times) and have become the defining sound of real deal, honest-to-god Kentucky music. Lydia Cash grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Chicago on a whim in 2013, and her love for the city has since become a wellspring of inspiration for her music.​Cash's latest release, Indigo, boasts her fresh indie take on country music, weaving synths with traditional pedal steel, her airy voice floating with stacked harmonies and emotional, heartfelt lyrics. The five songs share a common theme of longing, whether that be for a person, a feeling, or for the past. Honest, full of heart, with confessional lyrics, Cash leaves us feeling good and wanting more.​Cash's anticipated EP Blush will be released on August 2nd.

John Kadlecik is a singer, songwriter, and musician based in the DC-area who is primarily known for being a guitar-slinging sideman to Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir in the band Furthur. Original co-founder of Dark Star Orchestra right here on Martyrs' stage, John has been performing improvisationally-oriented shows and touring nationally for the last 20 years. His work includes several studio releases of original music, and he is currently active with Melvin Seals & JGB in addition his own group, The John Kadlecik Band, and The Golden Gate Wingmen. Martyrs' is thrilled to host 2 nights with John K's Furthurmore!

CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series, ‘The First Time’, is unlike any storytelling show in Chicago. It pairs our six unique readers' personal stories about a first-time experience with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by our house band, The First Time Three, featuring Liam Davis, Gerald Dowd and Steve Frisbie. The band has played with musicians including Robbie Fulks, Nora O'Connor, Justin Roberts, Tributosaurus, Frisbie and more, and takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements of said covers. Wyatt Waddell has been described as Chicago’s Boy Wonder for his complex melodies, exuberant presence, and powerful yet versatile vocal range, which moves seamlessly between the raspy timbre of James Brown to the melodic whimsy of Paul McCartney. Though his musicality recalls the old greats, his inventive and playful approach is entirely new. A multi-instrumentalist known for his perfect pitch and instinctive songwriting, Wyatt’s talents are on full display in his first three singles, Cyber Eyes, Time (Don't Let Me Go) & Untrain My Heart released in the last year. Wyatt has been bubbling at the edges of the Chicago underground and is now set to bring his infectious mix of R&B, pop and funk into the music world with his new single Sleeper out now on ROSEBUD ALLDAY. Sophia Cruz is a Funk, Neosoul singer and musician taking influence from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Allen Stone, Hiatus Kaiyote and Amy Winehouse and more. Her origins trace back to growing up in a household with parents as musicians. Her inspiration for becoming a multi-instrumentalist is nothing but a reflection of the environment she was raised in. The son of a small town farming community, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow midwesterner John Prine, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small town roots, tilled with city streets mentality, are turning heads North and South of I-80.“I love the energy, music, and creativity of Chicago, but at the same time, the roots and hard work of my small town,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan, Illinois, with a population less than 2,000, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs.He writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan, everyone has a story, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way,” he says. “My generation may have been labeled as slackers, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t work hard - many people I know put in 50-60 hours a week and 12 hour days. That’s what keeps me playing. I don’t like anyone to be left out; my music is for everyone in big and very small towns.”He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams, and it was a revelation. Prine and Guthrie quickly followed. Jack Callahan is a musician based in Chicago, IL. He is known for his singing and songwriting and backing of traditional Irish music on guitar. A multi-instrumentalist, Jack can be heard in the pubs and clubs with his fellow Boils bandmates, James Conway and Mike Austin. Performed, recorded and produced by Jack Callahan, This Settled Life spans the songwriting journey from his unsettled formative years until now. The songs touch upon themes such as looking for love(I'll Keep Searching), coping with loss(Ghosts of Pictures Past) and overall hope. When not pursuing music, he enjoys his settled life.

A Six-piece band, The Mary Wallopers were formed by brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy and their friend Sean McKenna traveling the length and breadth of Ireland singing and collecting songs. Their early live performances exuded a raw energy and their self-titled first album perfectly captured their sound and ethos, one filled with warmth, intimacy, chaos and enough sparks ready to light any fire.

Peter Erskine has played drums since the age of 4 and is known for his versatility and love of working in different musical contexts. He appears on 700 albums and film scores, has won 2 Grammy Awards and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Berklee School of Music. Fifty albums have been released under his own name or as co-leader. He has played with the Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson big bands, Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Kenny Wheeler, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Brecker Brothers, The Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny & Gary Burton, John Scofield, et al, and has appeared as a soloist with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, plus the London, Los Angeles, Chicago, BBC Symphony, Bochum, Tokyo Metropolitan, Yomiuri Nippon, Oslo and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras. He premiered Mark-Anthony Turnage’s “Erskine — Concerto for Drumset & Orchestra” with Beethoven Orchester Bonn and performed it at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Peter has been voted ’Best Jazz Drummer of the Year’ ten times by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine and was elected into its Hall of Fame in 2017.

They yearned to express as individuals and connect as a whole, free of judgment and focused on fun; 15 years later, their new album shows that their initial mission remains exactly the same. Through 10 energetic and inspired tracks, FORWARD exhibits a tight knit group of longtime friends seasoned in accessing that musical joy together. “We just flip a switch, and boom, we’re locked in - it’s a level of connection we don’t take for granted” says bandleader Miles Francis, whose Manhattan basement served both as the sole recording studio for their new album and the site of their very first rehearsals in the early days. This new collection of material certainly showcases their cutting edge instruments and technical virtuosity but the focus here is on the songs, chock full of catchy riffs and melodies ranging from delicate and heartfelt to full on headbanger’s ball.CTS have performed in a half-dozen countries across three continents. After fifteen years, six albums, innumerable sold out shows, and countless libations, Americana mavericks Horseshoes & Hand Grenades appropriately consider themselves a “family” on a wild, wonderful, and often whacky roller coaster. The bond between the quintet— Adam Greuel [guitar, vocals], David C. Lynch [harmonica, accordion, vocals], Collin Mettelka [fiddle, vocals], Russell Pedersen [banjo, vocals], and Samual Odin [bass, vocals]— fuels their creativity and chemistry on stage and in the studio.“Sometimes, it feels like we’re modern day cowboys on some kind of strange journey,” Adam affirms with a laugh. “We’re five friends who set out to do something we enjoy doing, meet interesting people, see old friends, and make some new buddies along the way. Because of that sense of friendship, everything seems to happen organically. It's been one hell of a ride.”That’s been the case since these five musicians first met in Stevens Point, WI at college, joined forces, and hit the road harder post-graduation in roughly 2013. Sqwerv's roots run deep in the Denver music scene. Those roots began to take hold as the band started hosting local open jams and playing gigs at small bars and venues in 2017. Since then, Sqwerv has become a staple in Denver's music scene with bands like Magic Beans, Squeaky Feet, Eminence Ensemble and Rado.This four-piece Indie-Psych Rock band’s love for classic rock, psychedelic music and improvisation creates a sound that is refreshingly original and exciting. Sqwerv realizes the importance of good songwriting and is always pushing themselves in the improvisation. The band spends a great deal of time writing lyrics, composing, and developing song structure that has grown into a catalogue that ranges from twelve minute prog songs inspired by Homer's Odyssey to two minute psych songs about love. They are fiercely driven to get to those transcendent, improvised spaces that all jam-music lovers crave. Sqwerv continues to deliver to their audiences through groove, counterpoint, polyrhythms and risk taking.In the last two years the band has released two studio albums, three live albums and completed two national tours with no plans on stopping. Fantastic Cat almost died. Each member also individually (but at separate times) faced devastating heartbreak, went to jail, got sober, almost quit music entirely, reconnected with a long-estranged family member, started making music again, hit rock bottom, had a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger who changed their perspective on life, almost quit music entirely a second time, reconciled their progressive, liberal ways with their strict, conservative upbringing, and embraced the raw power of their sexuality. It was quite a summer.And sure, you may be reading this right now saying, “Wow, that kind of sounds like the band just basically jammed every album bio cliché they could think of into a single paragraph without anything to back it up in a pathetically transparent attempt to generate press coverage.” But that kind of cynical thinking is exactly why GQ owns Pitchfork now (or whatever the hell happened there). Anyway, it’s all real, and if it makes for the kind of inspirational headline that editors and advertisers alike both find highly clickable, then so be it.You see, two years ago, Fantastic Cat was nothing more than a little-known rock band with a cult following (their fans were primarily members of Heaven’s Gate). That all changed with the release of their award-eligible debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat, which garnered the kind of press you simply can’t make up. USA Today proclaimed, “We don’t have a music writer anymore,” while NPR received multiple copies of the album in the mail, and The New York Times’ Jon Pareles declared, “I’m currently out of the office and will respond when I return.”Success went to the supergroup’s head, though, and through a series of dramatic events almost too unbelievable to recount in specific, verifiable detail, they nearly lost everything, only to triumphantly overcome their seemingly insurmountable setbacks in a way that just begs for a Judd Apatow-produced HBO Max documentary (or at the very least, a decent Spotify playlist placement somewhere closer to the top than the bottom).Today, Fantastic Cat is back and older than ever, taking America (and the nicer parts of Europe) by storm with their smash hit new album, Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat, which, as of this writing, hasn’t technically been released yet, but seems almost certain to be a huge success based on industry trends and corporate forecasting.Galvanized by a transformative journey into the spiritual vortices of the Pocono Mountains, the band found inspiration for their sophomore effort in the world of mind-expanding psychedelics: they dropped antacids, experimented with mushrooms (primarily porcini), and even began microdosing a variety of hard seltzers. The result was an album that could only be described as “Christopher Cross crossed with Kris Kristofferson,” a bewildering blend of stepdad rock and in-law country destined to solidify their status as your least favorite songwriter’s favorite songwriters. But no one hit the record button, and the sessions went mercifully undocumented.Instead, the album they turned in to the label is an entirely different collection, one that meets (but does not exceed) the minimum Grammy® eligibility requirements in all major televised categories.
