DISTRICT 97 is undoubtedly the most musically adventurous rock band in the world to feature an American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist. Since 2008, this quintet from Chicago has melded an adventurous, uncompromising instrumental prowess with the look, sound, and stage presence of vocalist Leslie Hunt. Through world tours and a stream of studio and live releases, the band has garnered a worldwide fanbase; collaborating with the iconic late singer/bassist John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia, UK) and drawing praise from Bill Bruford (drummer of Yes/King Crimson/Genesis), Mike Portnoy (drummer of Dream Theater/Avenged Sevenfold) and other rock luminaries along the way. DISTRICT 97 rehearses doggedly to refine their compositions, ensemble-playing, and stage presentation; their standards for excellence have only grown more rigorous with the passage of time. Their latest studio album STAY FOR THE ENDING (released October 2023) has been widely acclaimed as their greatest work to date.
Hailing from the singularly vibrant musical hotbed known as Chicago, CHEER-ACCIDENT has been a creative, vital force in rock music for over 20 years. They constantly strive to surprise their audiences and themselves through relentless reinvention. From dreamy pop to angular art-rock, CHEER-ACCIDENT strikes a powerful balance between personalized and unique studio wizardry and the visceral excitement of a well-honed, explosive live rock band. The band is a quintet at its foundation, fronted by Carmen Armillas, whose powerfully emotive voice has recently led CHEER-ACCIDENT down the path of even deeper connectedness with their already-loyal audience. Presenting itself in various configurations, the band’s core personnel is frequently augmented by some of Chicago’s finest musicians. Their body of work is unparalleled in its ambition and originality, and their twolatest releases, “Fear Draws Misfortune” and “No Ifs, Ands or Dogs” (both on Cuneiform Records), demonstrate how the band continues to improve with each passing year. After their hugely successful performance at last year’s Rock In Opposition Festival in France, they are returning to Europe for several shows in July 2014, this time as a streamlined quartet: Dante Kester- bass. Jeff Libersher- guitar, vocals, trumpet. Evelyn Davis- vocals, keyboards, melodica. Thymme Jones- drums, trumpet, vocals

If the old saying about talent equaling success were true, then The Steepwater Band would already be a household name, rubbing shoulders with Aerosmith, Bad Company and other like-minded travelers in our collective Rock 'n Roll Fantasy. But that's not how things always work, and this band knows it and still leans into it, smiling, with everything in them, not for brass rings and marquees, but because they must! For them, the music life is a calling and not some stupid costume one puts on to shake loose gold, fame, and groupies. In a land of caricatures, it's striking to come face-to-face with the real thing.Something primal lurks in their music, but always wrestling with emotions and stories that are everyday-ready ~ music at once strut-inducing sexy and brass knuckles honest, a sound evolved smartly & patiently through countless gigs, running the bulls whenever and wherever they've been welcomed since 1998. AC/DC once said, "If you got the dollar, we got the song / Just wanna boogie woogie all night long," and The Steepwater Band surely embodies this lip-smacking urge to get some in this mean old world, befitting the group's Chicago roots and their earthy understanding of crackling city blues. The abiding, resounding passion inside this band is never in question. Dive into their seemingly endless catalog of songs just about anywhere, and the heart and muscle pumping away inside every track are palpable and present in a most pleasing way. Their sound is like a soundtrack for arm wrestling The Devil and then drinking shots with him 'til sunrise after you've pinned him down. Their songs bridge the miles between lovers, throw lines to brothers and sisters in need of some understanding and a spark that makes them shuffle, eyes closed, shaking off the day's heavy load, ready for another round because the right song by the right band made them feel they had enough fight left in them. That's the kind of band you're dealing with here, and they'll be doing this long after all the pretty boys, package acts, and pretenders have left the stage. - Dennis CookThe Steepwater Band is – • Jeff Massey – lead vocals / guitars• Eric Saylors – guitars / lap steel / backing vocals• Joe Bishop – bass / backing vocals• Joe Winters – drums / percussion
The Midnight Calls is a denim and leather Rock & Roll outfit from Chicago. The band is fronted by Spain-born singer, Taran de Pablos and features guitarists Adam Arling (The Last Vegas, Urge Overkill, Warrior Soul) and Tony McQuaid (Loudmouth, Frank Bang & the Secret Stash), bassist Sean Barnes and drummer Chuck Harling. Their music is heavily influenced by the blues-infused sounds of classic bands like Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones or AC/DC. With a recipe based on grooves, hooks, and loud guitars as the main ingredients, The Midnight Calls are not reinventing the Rock & Roll wheel, but rather rolling it down the road with the swagger and style that you would expect from road-tested musicians that have toured the US and Europe a few times over.Since their inception in late 2022, The Midnight Calls have released three singles, “Whaddya”, “Coming Up Roses”, and their latest song, “So Cold” which features Chris Grove (Survivor, Joel Hoekstra, Eddie Money) on keyboards. While developing their music in the studio, the band has stayed active, sharing the stage with national acts like The Supersuckers, The Steepwater Band, Faster Pussycat, Blacktop Mojo, or Jason Kane & The Jive amongst others. At the moment, The Midnight Calls are working on material for their first album, to be expected in early 2025, with touring planned following its release.

Bronwyn Keith-Hynes has long been renowned as a prolific instrumentalist, earning two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards as well as a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. But on her latest album I Built a World, the Charlottesville native unlocks an impressive new sound: her voice."This is the first album I've ever sung lead on. Singing is something I'd always thought I'd do at some point and in 2020 I had the time and space to finally find my voice," Bronwyn says. Even as the pandemic halted touring and so much else, vocal lessons kept her focused. "It's funny," she jokes of the timing, "you put a mask on me and suddenly I want to sing."I Built a World marks her first vocal album, but Bronwyn has been a musician since before she can remember. "Apparently, I saw two girls busking on the street playing fiddles when I was three," she explains with a laugh, "and I pointed to them and said, 'I will do that.'"

Though many artists are defined by place, only a handful of artists come to define the places they’re from. The Local Honeys are Kentucky and Kentucky runs through their veins like an unbridled racehorse. When a master songsmith like Tom T Hall calls an artist “a great credit to a wonderful Kentucky tradition” it’s time to pull up a chair and pay attention. As it pertains to The Local Honeys he was right on the money. For almost a decade the duo (Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokley) have been an integral part of the Kentucky musicscape. They’ve paid their dues, garnering countless accolades and accomplishments (tours with Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, praise from the New York Times) and have become the defining sound of real deal, honest-to-god Kentucky music.
Lydia Cash grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Chicago on a whim in 2013, and her love for the city has since become a wellspring of inspiration for her music.Cash's latest release, Indigo, boasts her fresh indie take on country music, weaving synths with traditional pedal steel, her airy voice floating with stacked harmonies and emotional, heartfelt lyrics. The five songs share a common theme of longing, whether that be for a person, a feeling, or for the past. Honest, full of heart, with confessional lyrics, Cash leaves us feeling good and wanting more.Cash's anticipated EP Blush will be released on August 2nd.

The son of a small town farming community, Cody Diekhoff logged plenty of highway and stage time under the name Chicago Farmer before settling in the city in 2003. Profoundly inspired by fellow midwesterner John Prine, he’s a working-class folk musician to his core. His small town roots, tilled with city streets mentality, are turning heads North and South of I-80.“I love the energy, music, and creativity of Chicago, but at the same time, the roots and hard work of my small town,” he shares. Growing up in Delavan, Illinois, with a population less than 2,000, Diekhoff’s grandparents were farmers, and their values have always provided the baseline of his songs. He writes music for “the kind of people that come to my shows. Whether in Chicago or Delavan, everyone has a story, and everyone puts in a long day and works hard the same way,” he says. “My generation may have been labeled as slackers, but I don’t know anyone who doesn’t work hard - many people I know put in 50-60 hours a week and 12 hour days. That’s what keeps me playing. I don’t like anyone to be left out; my music is for everyone in big and very small towns.”He listened to punk rock and grunge as a kid before discovering a friend’s dad playing Hank Williams, and it was a revelation. Prine and Guthrie quickly followed. The name Chicago Farmer was originally for a band, but the utilitarian life of driving alone from bar to bar, city to city - to make a direct connection to his audience and listener, took a deeper hold."It's apparent Chicago Farmer has a refreshingly firm grip on where he comes from. The songs are covered to the elbows in dirt from the fields and smell of the sweaty factory floors. If the Midwest is looking for a voice, the search is over.” - No Depression“Chicago Farmer represents the best qualities of Midwestern U.S.A. His lyrics, his stories and his heart are true. He’ll give you that feeling of ‘going home’. He’ll make you want to say all those things you’ve been meaning to say but were too afraid. At the same time his songs can make you ask yourself some deep questions. His songs give you hope. If you didn’t know him I believe just his voice would make you believe every word he says. Definitely one of my favorite singers out there today.” - Pokey LaFarge“I love Chicago Farmer’s singing and playing and songs, but it’s the intention behind the whole of his work that moves me to consider him the genuine heir to Arlo Guthrie or Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He knows the shell game that goes on under folk music… which is sacred to me. Chicago Farmer is my brother; if you like me, you’ll love him.” - Todd Snider“Chicago Farmer has his finger on the modern Roots pulse with a display of gritty Country Rock and Folk from the gut amid a Folksingers mesh of lyrical humor and problems with a groove.” - The Alternate Root

Daryl Johns began a decade ago as a series of unreleased songs when Johns, a classically trained upright bass player and jazz prodigy, got sick of playing standards and started noodling around with different genres, “quilting pop melodies together in a maximalist way,” as he puts it. And after signing with friend and famous chiller Mac DeMarco’s label, Johns began experimenting with his own offbeat takes on indie rock. But it would be remiss to mistake the sum for its parts; Daryl Johns is no pastiche, instead creating its own sprawling universe of loosey-goosey, feel-good jaunts. Painting modern landscapes in retro strokes, the album’s sound is uniquely fresh yet familiar in a million different directions.

Federico Aubele makes his return to Chicago, celebrating the release of his latest acoustic album. Following a year of extensive touring with an intimate, minimalist setup, Aubele captured the magic of these live performances in the studio. The new album features fan-favorite songs reimagined in their purest form—just his Spanish guitar and his velvety baritone voice. The setlist for the show spans Aubele’s entire catalog, alongside new songs, creating a deeply emotional journey that resonates with themes of love, loss, struggle, and the search for meaning. Listeners are invited to reflect, relive cherished memories, and find personal connections through the raw beauty of his music. Press quotes:"An artist who traverses musical genres as easily as he does geographical borders. While touches of nostalgia and longing seep into both the words and the way he sings them, Aubele can also wrangle a shy smile and a whimsical raised eyebrow with that deep, emotive voice." NPR"Aubele’s vocals are richly poetic and echo phrasings reminiscent of a Spanish Leonard Cohen." Settle Weekly"..connects cultural threads traversing the continent…” LA Times"a fusion of music without boundaries, carried by gentle, reverberant vocals."All About Jazz

Mucca Pazza is a 30-odd-member rock ‘n roll marching band from Chicago, IL. Inspired by the subversive collaborations of Dada and Surrealism, Mucca Pazza seeks to attain the seemingly unattainable through an ever-evolving collective of artistic voices. Trumpets, trombones, saxes and sousaphones combine with guitar, mandolin, violin, cello and accordion, all on top of a rhythmic drumline — and all dressed in mismatched marching band uniforms. Add cheerleaders performing absurdist chants and you’ll quickly understand the band’s ethos: the bigger the better, the more the merrier, collectively jumping for joy.Ever since the band assembled in 2004 in the distinctly Chicago parking lot of a steel mill, Mucca Pazza has melded original compositions with street-theater spectacle. Musical influences range from BĂ©la BartĂłk to Balkan folk, Björk to Charles Mingus, Clara Schumann to Frank Zappa — they are as comfortable in a performance hall as they are in football stadium bleachers.Nearly two decades in, Mucca Pazza continues as a multi-disciplinary fantasy of original music, shouted dream poems and sweaty dance freak outs performed by a large-scale collective that exists due to the grace and love of its ever-changing roster.

Mungion is Justin Reckamp (Guitar/Vocals), Joe Re (Keys/Vocals), Grant Martin (Bass/Vocals) and Johnny Gifford (Drums). Drawing inspiration from a wide array of musical styles, they create a raucous, yet jubilant sound all of their own. Since their inception in Spring of 2015, Mungion is quickly becoming known for their undeniably explosive and charismatic live shows. The Chicago-based four-piece is rooted in their ambitious compositions and improvisational ability. Known for their whimsical songs and goofy stage antics, Mungion’s joyous presence is a natural extension of its members, making for live performances that are infectiously lighthearted and deeply sincere. However, underlying the band’s quirky nature is a tremendous amount of virtuosity across all of its members. Combined, this talent and playfulness emboldens the group to be fearless in the studio and on stage. Mungion is guaranteed to have you smiling ear to ear and leaving wanting more.
Instrumental progressive rock trio Consider the Source has been honing in on their unique sci-fi fusion sound for over a decade, but it is with their 2024 release, “The Stare” that their sonic vision is fully realized. Produced by David Prater (Dream Theater, Firehouse), the 5-song album reveals more of the heavy metal influence the band has always had while also including the improvisational and cultural elements they have become synonymous with. This new collection of material certainly showcases their cutting edge instruments and technical virtuosity but the focus here is on the songs, chock full of catchy riffs and melodies ranging from delicate and heartfelt to full on headbanger’s ball.CTS have performed in a half-dozen countries across three continents. They have shared the stage with a wide variety of artists, including: Victor Wooten, King Crimson Projekt, Wyclef Jean, Ozric Tentacles, Soulive, The Disco Biscuits, Rusted Root, Papadosio, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Wayne Krantz, TAUK, Spafford and many others. They have performed at festivals and events including: Electric Forest, Peach Fest, Northlands, Gathering of the Vibes, Mountain Jam, Resonance, Summercamp, Shakori Hills, ProgDay, and Progtober.

After ten years, five albums, innumerable sold out shows, and countless libations, Americana mavericks Horseshoes & Hand Grenades appropriately consider themselves a “family” on a wild, wonderful, and often whacky roller coaster. The bond between the quintet— Adam Greuel [guitar, vocals], David C. Lynch [harmonica, accordion, vocals], Collin Mettelka [fiddle, vocals], Russell Pedersen [banjo, vocals], and Samual Odin [bass, vocals]— fuels their creativity and chemistry on stage and in the studio.“Sometimes, it feels like we’re modern day cowboys on some kind of strange journey,” Adam affirms with a laugh. “We’re five friends who set out to do something we enjoy doing, meet interesting people, see old friends, and make some new buddies along the way. Because of that sense of friendship, everything seems to happen organically.”That’s been the case since these five musicians first met in Stevens Point, WI at college, joined forces, and hit the road harder post-graduation in roughly 2013. They have ignited stages alongside everyone from Greensky Bluegrass, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Trampled By Turtles to Railroad Earth, Merle Haggard, and Marty Stuart in addition to appearances at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Delfest, High Sierra Music Festival, Blue Ox Music Festival, Northwest String Summit, John Hartford Memorial Festival, and many more. Their five albums—Another Round [2012], This Old Town [2013], Middle Western [2015], The Ode (2018), and Miles in Blue (2020) take the listener through a wide range of musical and emotional landscapes, something surely provoked by the five different members all sharing songwriting duties.Their most recent album, “Miles in Blue” is an 18-track album that celebrates their 10 years together as a band. While the album certainly nods to their tried and true blend of “new-time old-time” music, it also explores new musical avenues as the band pushes themselves to discover what else “can be”.“It marks a point of growth,” explains Adam. “We’ve got those ripper type tunes we’re known for on there, but we’re experimenting with other elements. Little pieces of everybody are encapsulated in this record. We were really conscious of allowing our respective musical curiosities into the fold. Sam drops in a jazz and classical feel. Dave brings that Zydeco, Cajun, and old school blues vibe. Collin turned up this kinda pop folk energy, and Russell gives us the old-timey banjo feel. For me, I’m trying to play out my singer-songwriter curiosities. There are five songwriters in the band, and we’ve gotten better at harnessing our individual creativity and bringing it to the collective.”The boys found the perfect place to bottle those signature spirits. They retreated to Cannon Falls, MN in order to live and record at Pachyderm Studios — where Nirvana recorded In Utero — for just a week. Joined by the Hard Working American’s Chad Staehly in the producer’s chair, they tracked the eighteen numbers that would comprise Miles in Blue over the course of a marathon session.“Pachyderm is in the middle of nowhere,” he elaborates. “We’re all outdoorsy people, so the setting was super comfortable. It contributed to the laid back approach. It was by far the easiest recording project we’ve done. The whole experience was super positive and uplifting.”The Horseshoes & Hand Grenades family grows stronger by the day. “The best part of this has been building a community,” Adam leaves off. “In this day and age, it’s wise to look for things that bring people together rather than separate them. We’re creating an extended family to get through these times together. That’s the ‘Horseshoe Crew.’ Everything happens because of that bond between the band and the folks there fueling the fire.”

Fantastic Cat almost died. Each member also individually (but at separate times) faced devastating heartbreak, went to jail, got sober, almost quit music entirely, reconnected with a long-estranged family member, started making music again, hit rock bottom, had a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger who changed their perspective on life, almost quit music entirely a second time, reconciled their progressive, liberal ways with their strict, conservative upbringing, and embraced the raw power of their sexuality. It was quite a summer. And sure, you may be reading this right now saying, “Wow, that kind of sounds like the band just basically jammed every album bio clichĂ© they could think of into a single paragraph without anything to back it up in a pathetically transparent attempt to generate press coverage.” But that kind of cynical thinking is exactly why GQ owns Pitchfork now (or whatever the hell happened there). Anyway, it’s all real, and if it makes for the kind of inspirational headline that editors and advertisers alike both find highly clickable, then so be it.You see, two years ago, Fantastic Cat was nothing more than a little-known rock band with a cult following (their fans were primarily members of Heaven’s Gate). That all changed with the release of their award-eligible debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat, which garnered the kind of press you simply can’t make up. USA Today proclaimed, “We don’t have a music writer anymore,” while NPR received multiple copies of the album in the mail, and The New York Times’ Jon Pareles declared, “I’m currently out of the office and will respond when I return.”Success went to the supergroup’s head, though, and through a series of dramatic events almost too unbelievable to recount in specific, verifiable detail, they nearly lost everything, only to triumphantly overcome their seemingly insurmountable setbacks in a way that just begs for a Judd Apatow-produced HBO Max documentary (or at the very least, a decent Spotify playlist placement somewhere closer to the top than the bottom).Today, Fantastic Cat is back and older than ever, taking America (and the nicer parts of Europe) by storm with their smash hit new album, Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat, which, as of this writing, hasn’t technically been released yet, but seems almost certain to be a huge success based on industry trends and corporate forecasting.Galvanized by a transformative journey into the spiritual vortices of the Pocono Mountains, the band found inspiration for their sophomore effort in the world of mind-expanding psychedelics: they dropped antacids, experimented with mushrooms (primarily porcini), and even began microdosing a variety of hard seltzers. The result was an album that could only be described as “Christopher Cross crossed with Kris Kristofferson,” a bewildering blend of stepdad rock and in-law country destined to solidify their status as your least favorite songwriter’s favorite songwriters. But no one hit the record button, and the sessions went mercifully undocumented.Instead, the album they turned in to the label is an entirely different collection, one that meets (but does not exceed) the minimum Grammy® eligibility requirements in all major televised categories. Now That’s What I Call Fantastic Cat!
